Chennault International Airport Awarded Federal Grant for Taxiway Rehabilitation

Chennault International Airport Authority has been awarded $903,622 in federal funding to support taxiway rehabilitation at Chennault International Airport in Lake Charles.

The funding is part of nearly $14.9 million in federal airport grants announced for Louisiana by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy. The grants, provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will support airport infrastructure projects across the state, including drainage improvements, taxiway expansion, pavement rehabilitation, airport planning and development.

At Chennault, the grant will provide federal funding to rehabilitate sections of Taxiways A, B and C. The project is designed to help maintain pavement integrity and extend the useful life of the airport’s taxiway infrastructure.

Improving Long-Term Airfield Infrastructure

Taxiways are a critical part of airport operations, allowing aircraft to move safely and efficiently between runways, hangars, ramps and service areas. Regular rehabilitation helps preserve pavement conditions, reduce long-term maintenance needs and support continued airfield reliability.

For Chennault, maintaining strong airfield infrastructure is especially important because of the airport’s role as an industrial aviation hub. The airport supports aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul operations, aircraft painting, defense-related activity, business aviation and other aerospace services.

The federal grant will help Chennault continue investing in the infrastructure required to serve its tenants, support aircraft movement and maintain a safe operating environment.

Part of a Statewide Airport Investment

Chennault was one of several Louisiana airports included in the funding announcement. Other projects across the state include drainage improvements at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans, taxiway reconstruction and widening at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, lighting vault equipment replacement and airfield marking restoration at Lake Charles Regional Airport, and drainage improvements at DeQuincy Industrial Airpark.

The statewide funding package reflects the ongoing need for infrastructure investment at airports of varying sizes and functions. While some projects focus on flood mitigation and stormwater management, others address pavement rehabilitation, hangar development, safety improvements and long-range planning.

Chennault’s grant is specifically focused on maintaining pavement integrity on key taxiway sections, a practical infrastructure improvement that supports both current operations and future use.

Supporting Aviation, Air Freight and Economic Growth in Louisiana

Chennault International Airport continues to play a significant role in the aviation and economic landscape of Southwest Louisiana. Its facilities and available airfield infrastructure support businesses that rely on access to large-scale aviation assets, specialized hangar space and reliable airport operations.

The rehabilitation of Taxiways A, B and C aligns with Chennault’s broader focus on maintaining and improving the infrastructure that supports its tenants and regional aviation activity. By extending the useful life of taxiway pavement, the project contributes to the airport’s ability to support safe and efficient aircraft operations over time.

Federal airport grants are an important funding source for infrastructure projects that may otherwise place a larger burden on local airport authorities. For Chennault, this grant represents continued investment in the airfield systems that keep the airport positioned for operational reliability and long-term development.

As aviation activity continues across Louisiana, investments like this help ensure airports remain prepared to meet current demands while planning for future growth. For Chennault International Airport, the $903,622 grant will support essential taxiway improvements that strengthen the airport’s infrastructure and its role in the Lake Charles aviation sector.
