Chennault Honors Jerry Theunissen for 17 Years of Dedicated Advocacy
Chennault International Airport extends its deepest gratitude to Jerry Theunissen, a valued friend and advisor whose professional service to the airport concludes today after 17 impactful years as our government relations consultant.
Theunissen’s distinguished career spans military service, business, public office, and economic development—each chapter marked by leadership and integrity. A retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, his military service began in 1953 and continued for over two decades. As a highly skilled pilot, he flew a wide range of aircraft, including fighters, heavy jets, and reconnaissance planes. During the Vietnam War, he served with distinction as a Forward Air Controller, flying the Bird Dog aircraft in support of combat operations.
Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1974, Jerry transitioned into aviation business leadership as co-owner of Riceland Aviation and served for 18 years as the manager of the Jennings Airport. At the same time, he pursued a public service path that led to a 16-year tenure as a Louisiana legislator, serving in both the House of Representatives and the State Senate. His policy expertise and deep understanding of regional priorities made him a trusted voice in Baton Rouge and beyond.
In 2008, Jerry brought his extensive knowledge and experience to Chennault, where he began his role as government relations consultant. Over the past 17 years, he has played a pivotal role in advancing Chennault’s mission. His ability to navigate complex legislative and regulatory environments helped position the airport for continued growth and long-term success. Whether working behind the scenes in support of infrastructure funding or advocating for policies to strengthen economic development in Southwest Louisiana, Jerry’s work consistently reflected his unwavering commitment to the region.
Jerry has been instrumental in shaping strategic relationships at every level of government. His guidance has helped Chennault not only remain competitive but also emerge as a recognized force in economic development and aviation innovation. His legacy includes strengthened partnerships, successful funding efforts, and an expanded voice for Chennault within state and federal arenas.
He has been more than a consultant; he has been a mentor, advocate, and champion for the airport and the broader region. His leadership, vision, and dedication have left a lasting impact.
