Chennault’s Multi-Phase Expansion Includes Partnership with the Louisiana National Guard

Chennault International Airport is taking significant steps in its multi-phase infrastructure expansion, turning an ambitious vision into reality. The airport’s recent partnership with the Louisiana National Guard is at the heart of this transformation, creating a synergy that benefits both the airport and the Guard while laying the groundwork for long-term economic growth.

A Strategic Collaboration for Economic Growth

As part of this collaboration, members of the National Guard’s 225th Engineer Brigade embarked on a two-month training exercise aimed at clearing trees and grading land at the former Mallard Cove Golf Course, a site that was significantly impacted by Hurricane Laura. This 220-acre property, now dubbed Site 1, is owned by Chennault and represents a key component in the airport’s future development plans. Site 1 is envisioned as a prime location for new businesses, strategically positioned to attract developers and site selectors looking for growth opportunities in Southwest Louisiana.

The tree clearing and land grading at Site 1 were more than just necessary clean-up efforts — they are part of a broader initiative to turn post-storm recovery into a catalyst for economic development. By partnering with the National Guard, Chennault is not only making progress on its infrastructure goals but also contributing to the readiness and training of Guard members. The work is being led by Col. Scott Slaven, Commander of the 225th Engineer Brigade, as part of the Department of Defense’s Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program. This program allows Guard members to gain hands-on experience in areas such as civil engineering, construction, and transportation while enhancing their operational skills for deployment readiness.

For Chennault, the partnership presents a win-win situation. By utilizing the Guard’s expertise in land clearing and heavy equipment operation, the airport will save Calcasieu Parish taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in contract costs while preparing Site 1 for future development. “This effort promotes cost savings that will encourage new businesses to come to Chennault and grow jobs,” said Chennault Executive Director Kevin Melton. “The groundwork being laid at Site 1 will enable the implementation of utilities and other essential infrastructure, making it a prime location for future tenants.”

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the partnership also strengthens Chennault’s relationship with the Louisiana National Guard, which will soon become a permanent fixture at the airport. The Guard is in the process of completing construction on a new readiness center, set to open later this year. This facility will enhance the Guard’s ability to respond to emergencies, further solidifying Chennault’s role as a strategic hub for both military and civilian operations in the region.

Chennault International Airport’s expansion is poised to create lasting economic opportunities for Southwest Louisiana. By partnering with the National Guard and leveraging its innovative training program, the airport is setting the stage for future growth while providing valuable training opportunities for those who serve. As Site 1 is prepared for development, the airport’s role as an engine of economic development in the region will only grow stronger.
